When a loved one is diagnosed with dementia, how do you cope?
I made this brooch to process my feelings. My mother has dementia. I see her struggle as she loses herself and fears the future. She feels she has no value. I wonder: can you decide when your life is complete?
With these questions in mind, have you ever thought about whether your loved ones know what to do if you can no longer speak for yourself?
I don't want to impose my views on such a personal subject, but I want to foster awareness. The title of my brooch questions whether intervention is forbidden by societal laws or religion. It also prompts me to consider whether I dare to make a decision on this matter.
This context guides my choice of brooch materials. Marble is often used by sculptors to create human figures. Both the marble and the brooch's wavy form suggest the body. The sharp, straight, polished edge shows human intervention. Argentium silver offers neutrality, as it does not tarnish over time.
I have written about the work process in the BLOG Sketches of my work 8 and the exhibition in exhibition Anatomy of decisions
