With this piece, I responded to an open call from AGC - Associazione Gioiello Contemporaneo. I am grateful to have been selected for the Devotional Jewellery 17th edition.

As a metaphor for human life, an imperfect thread of brass becomes the path along which stones slide, representing childhood, adulthood, and old age. Dying completes the cycle of life and links its beginning and end. To me, loss means being unable to create new memories with a loved one once they are gone.

I take comfort in memories from two stages of my loved one’s life, both of which I have shared. I keep half of these memories, while the half-spheres show the part of our shared past my loved one holds.

Continuing this symbolism, the bricks in my piece allude to my loved one’s belief that God created Adam from the earth. The use of brass, a material humans have used since prehistoric times, and its warm colour suggests the value and beauty found in everyday moments.

In the accompanying video, the meaning of the box included with this piece is revealed. Just as we lay a loved one to rest in a coffin or place them lovingly on a pedestal, the box embodies both cherishing and pride for those we have lost.
