Cut in Idar-Oberstein.
In summer 2018, I attended the Cut, Grind and Polish workshop led by Alexander Friedrich as part of the International Summer Academy in Idar-Oberstein.
I crafted the stone for this two-finger ring from blue lace agate, also known as Chalcedon. To highlight the gemstone’s distinctive pattern, I designed the sides of the stone to be extra high rather than concealing it in a setting box. The stone reminds me of sparkling, tumbling water, much like the feeling I get from Miles Davis' song "All Blues," which inspired the title.
I mounted the stone on a solid Argentium "H", so it rests between the middle and ring fingers. To display the gem’s beauty when not worn, I created a beech wood base.
The stone grinding workshop provided an excellent introduction and hands-on experience with all the tools. Throughout the week, I gained valuable skills and connected with inspiring participants.
I documented my experience in Idar-Oberstein in the BLOG series International Summer Academy 1, 2, and 3.
