Meaning of Kiddush Cup

A traditional kiddush cup is made of gold or silver and is beautifully decorated and/or engraved with names or Torah texts. Kiddush cups are filled with wine or grape juice at the beginning of the Shabbat meal on Friday evening. Kiddush literally means sanctification, and by saying prayers and accompanying rituals, an ordinary meal becomes a religious act.

This Kiddush cup was commissioned by JF's grandfather as a Bar Mitzvah gift.

The cup’s design features the initials JF holding the chalice, symbolizing how JF cherishes and protects his beliefs. When inverted, the initials rest atop a mountain, representing the ancestors whose legacy continues through each generation.

The cup is first 3D-printed in wax, then encased and melted out. Molten silver is poured into the mold, forming the cup through the traditional lost-wax method.

This intricate casting required expert craftsmanship, which was provided by Horbach Idar-Oberstein; their skill enabled the realisation of this challenging design.

The cup's finish and patina are applied by hand.
