Resilience allows you to transform grief into a new start.

With a sense of sadness, I was looking at the shards of my porcelain lamp. Just an accident. The end of an object. An object that marked in the past the beginning of a new phase in my life. After a while, looking at the shards, I saw the curvature and the virginal white. So they went into my studio rather than the garbage can. I ground them into ovals and joined them with a square wire that I pulled from a found brass rod.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold or silver paint. It treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise. For me, it also represents accepting the inevitable things you encounter on your life's path.

It ties in with my research into the values and appreciation that people give to materials.

I wrote the BLOG On resilience about the work process.
