Meaning of Kiddush Cup

A traditional kiddush cup is made of gold or silver and is beautifully decorated and/or engraved with names or Torah texts. Kiddush cups are filled with wine or grape juice at the beginning of the Shabbat meal on Friday evening. Kiddush literally means sanctification, and by saying prayers and accompanying rituals, an ordinary meal becomes a religious act.

Kiddush cup as a gift for the Bar Mitzvah of TF, commissioned by his grandfather.

The pleasure of his grandson trying to play music pieces faster and faster on the piano of the grandfather's mother was the inspiration for this design. Speed and movement or rather the illusion of it, because magic is that other passion of his. I was reminded of the painting Dog on the Leash by Giacomo Balla (Turin, 18 July 1871 - Rome, 1 March 1958), who wanted to express movement in his works. The highly polished bottom of this cup gets scratched by use, just like life leaves its traces on us humans.

This cup is 3D printed in wax, after which the wax model was cast in silver using the classic lost wax method.

Thanks to Horbach Idar-Oberstein for the craftsmanship with which they cast this difficult design.

The finishing of the cup are done by hand.
