Kiddush cup as a gift for the Bar Mitzvah of TF, commissioned by his grandfather

This grandson's joy in speeding up pieces on his grandfather's mother's piano inspired this design. Speed and the illusion of movement reflect his passion for magic. It recalled Giacomo Balla's Dog on a Leash, which expressed movement. The high-gloss mug bottom gets scratched over time, just as life leaves marks on us.

This cup was 3D-printed in wax. The wax model was then cast in silver using the classic lost-wax method. Thanks to Horbach Idar-Oberstein for casting this challenging design. I finished the cup by hand.

Meaning of Kiddush Cup

A traditional kiddush cup is made of gold or silver and is beautifully decorated and/or engraved with names or Torah texts. Kiddush cups are filled with wine or grape juice at the beginning of the Shabbat meal on Friday evening. Kiddush literally means sanctification, and by saying prayers and accompanying rituals, an ordinary meal becomes a religious act.
